. the problem for mr. romney, well, presidential elections are decided by electoral votes. and in that puzzle, mitt's chances are starting to crumble like a poorly constructed game of genga. it's still a close race in virginia and florida, with the president up by two in the old dominion. it's ohio with the president opening up a lead of eight points in the buckeye state, where voting is under way. with ohio joining pennsylvania, are iowa and new hampshire turning increasingly blue, that puts the president at 265 electoral votes. mitt romney would have to run the table of every other swing state to get to victory. and clearly, romney's so-called supporters are now reaching for desperate measures. >> on the eve of the first presidential debate, a bombshell is about to be dropped on the white house because tonight you'll hear from barack obama like you've never heard from him before. >> oh, yes, that was the introduction last night before fox aired tape of a 2007 speech by then-candidate obama to a group of black ministers in which he criticized the response to hurricane katrina and provided ce

important moment of this presidential debate. in just a few hours as you said, mitt romney, barack obama squaring off here in denver. it will be a 90-minute debate. it will cover six different segments. most of it, though, john, is going to be on the economy. there's going to be three segments to focus on the economy. one segment on foreign policy. one segment on the role of governing and one segment on the role of government in people's lives, john. so how this is going to be set up is that the candidates will be sitting at podiums. if you're looking at your tv screen, mitt romney on your left, president obama on your right. the first question tonight, john, goes to barack obama. >> well, will they have a chance to mix it up and rebutt each other in a free-flowing way. >> organizers hope to have a flee-flowing discussion. this is the kind discussion we like to see because it allows the two candidates to discuss it amongst themselves. if there are questions about each other's plans, they can directly ask each other that. we have not seen that in this campaign and we'll see it tonight. >>

and counting until the presidential debate tonight. mitt romney, he is gaining in two swing states. could this be romney's springboard? romney has whittled the president's lead, take a look. he's whittled the president's lead in the two percentage points in virginia. this is according to a poll released today by marist college, the wall street journal and also nbc news. two-point lead for obama, that's down five points last month. keep in mind we're talking virginia, that's 13 electoral votes there. and check it out, similar story for you in florida. 29 electoral votes there. now, a one-point, one-point lead for obama, down from four points in september. we should mention here that poll shows the president still with the seven-point lead in ohio. we can't forget about ohio. but speaking nationwide here, the president's lead, in our cnn poll of polls, you can see it here, stands at 3 percentage points, unchanged. as we noticed today, kind of interesting, the president has gained one point and romney dropped one point. this is the gallup national tracking poll. obama with a six-point lead t

presidential debate. it will only be romney's first. the memo is actually quite praising of the president calling him one of the most talented political communicators in modern history. meyer says they're fully expecting a 90-minute attack aimed at tearing romney down. mr. obama's traveling press secretary is joking about the whole attempt to lower expectations saying well, he could just fall right off the stage. the president is up in basically all of the most recent polls. gallup has him at 50 to 44%. reuters has him up by 7 and even fox news has him up by 5. even some top romney officials are admitting he's a lousy candidate! according to politico this morning, republicans even some of those working for romney say the real problem is not the polls or the gaffes or the leaked 47% remark, it's just mitt romney. they say he's a great businessman but when it comes to leading a political campaign, he is just, plain unnatural. and planned parenthood is stepping up its attacks against the romney campaign. this week, voters in vi

this is very confusing. is the romney campaign betting they can get through by just confusing the american public into submission? >> alex, if i were the kind of person who got depressed by a lack of specificity and seriousness in presidential politics i would be very depressed. this cycle you can judge? in different ways. the lack of specificity is ghouling for three reasons, two serious guys, two, the country has big challenges and three both campaigns are enunciated this principle on big important serious things, rather than have the candidate be specific at all about what they do, they say really it's better for the public to have this the rashed out with congress after i'm elected. the president says the same thing about social security reform. i find it unorthodox and maybe i need to cover a few more to cover the romney campaign, a major float of a proposal in a local television interview the day or two before the debate. seems like the $17,000 cap -- >> bucket. >> is actually, i think, an interesting idea, but it's not one that governor romney is apparently actually proposing and no

believe in that larger idea of the narrative, what should the narrative be for romney tonight and should it be let's take this one great idea, pound it home as many times as you can or hope something sticks? >> no, the former. look, american presidential elections are usually decided on which candidate the public at large feels has the best vision of the future. our presidential elections are generally speaking, not about the past, but about the future. that's number one. so, in case of the narrative. number two, that we know that in politics as in so much else in life, after these debates are over, there will be a lot of people who can tell you specifically what any candidate said, but they will know how that candidate made them feel. so, the object and target for both candidates in the debates is for people to walk away feeling the person who handled it best. certainly people they want specifics, so governor romney, he needs to tell how with some detail his administration will be different from not just the obama administration, but from the president bush. with president obama, his ch
